The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) is the code department of the Illinois state government that operates the adult state prison system. The IDOC is led by a director appointed by the Governor of Illinois,and its headquarters are in Springfield.

The IDOC was established in 1970, combining the state's prisons, juvenile centers, and parole services. The juvenile corrections system was split off into the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice on July 1, 2006.

Responsibilities:

• Enforce Rules & Maintain Order: Monitor daily inmate behavior, keep the peace, and prevent riots, fights, and disturbances.
• Conduct Security Inspections: Search cells, common areas, mail, and visitors for weapons, drugs, or other contraband.
• Perform Headcounts: Regularly count individuals in custody to ensure everyone is present and accounted for.
• Escort & Transport: Move inmates safely between cells, courthouses, medical facilities, and work assignments.
• Write Reports & Logs: Document daily shift activities, rule violations, and unusual incidents.
• Manage Intakes & Bookings: Fingerprint, photograph, and process new arrivals in county or local holding facilities.
• Respond to Emergencies: Intervene in physical altercations, handle medical crises, and manage safety breaches.

Requirements:

• 18 years of age
• Valid driver's license
• High School Diploma or GED certificate
• U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
• Speak, read, and write English
