Job Description

Merck seeks a Senior Principal Scientist to lead mass spectrometry capabilities within the Quantitative Biosciences group in Boston. The role combines technical expertise in MS-based assay development with strategic leadership, mentorship, and collaboration across discovery programs to advance drug discovery decision-making.

Responsibilities

• Lead Boston mass spectrometry group supporting in vitro and in vivo pharmacology discovery needs
• Shape strategy for MS-enabled assay development, experimental design, and quantitative pharmacology applications
• Partner with multidisciplinary teams to develop assays informing mechanism, potency, selectivity, and translational decisions
• Provide scientific guidance to bench scientists on assay selection, study design, and data interpretation
• Mentor and develop scientists while fostering culture of scientific rigor and collaboration across local and global teams

Requirements

• Ph.D. in biology, pharmacology, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, or related STEM field plus 12+ years pharmaceutical/biotech research experience
• Deep expertise in mass spectrometry-based assay development and drug discovery applications
• Strong understanding of drug discovery process from hit finding through lead optimization
• Demonstrated experience applying quantitative pharmacology principles to biological systems
• Proven scientific leadership record in biopharmaceutical setting with measurable impact on programs
• Experience leading, mentoring, and developing scientists in research environments
• Ability to design experiments independently, interpret complex data, and communicate findings to multidisciplinary teams

Compensation: $214,100–$337,000 base
